On the street or in the street?
Which preposition is correct?
Study the following example sentences:
Hundreds of people were out on the streets for the protest.
Additional police officers must be deployed on the streets.
The person in the street isn't particularly interested in opera.
I always smile at the people who stop me in the street.
They live in Oxford Street. (BrE)
Emily works in a store on Redwood Street. (AmE)
As you can see, both prepositions are used with "the street". In most cases it does not matter which one you choose. But you should take the following points into consideration:
When we talk about addresses and only give the name of the street, we use "in" in British English and "on" in American English (examples above). When the number is mentioned, we have to use "at" in British or American English, e.g. I live at 16 Green Street.
When we talk about homeless people, the phrase "on the street/s" seems to be better than "in the street/s", e.g. We must help families living on the streets.
When we mean to say "an ordinary, average person" it is more common to use "the man in the street", "the woman in the street", "the person in the street", e.g. To win the election they must appeal to the man in the street.

Wyjaśnienie w języku polskim:
W ogólnym znaczeniu "na ulicy" możemy w angielskim używać albo "in the street", albo "on the street". Istnieją jednak pewne preferencje:
Przy podawaniu nazwy ulicy (bez numeru domu) używamy "in" w angielszczyźnie brytyjskiej natomiast "on" w angielszczyźnie amerykańskiej. Jeżeli numer ulicy i jej nazwę podajemy razem, używamy przyimka "at". Przykłady:
Mieszkam na ulicy Chrobrego. = I live in Chrobrego Street. (BrE)
Ona mieszka na ulicy Roosevelta. = She lives on Roosevelt Street. (AmE)
Mieszkam na ulicy Długiej nr 19. = I live at 19 Długa Street. (BrE+AmE)
W sensie "ludzie mieszkający na ulicy, czyli bezdomni" częściej stosowana jest forma "on the street/s", np. Ludzie mieszkający na ulicy potrzebują pomocy. = People living on the street need help.
W sensie "przeciętny, zwykły obywatel" częściej stosowana jest forma "the man/woman/person in the street", np. Zwykły człowiek z ulicy zakłada, że politycy nigdy nie są uczciwi. = The man in the street assumes that politicians are never honest.
