on the internet vs in the internet

On the internet or in the internet?
Which preposition is correct?

When you surf the net you look through information on the internet.
You can find all kinds of things on the internet. It is wrong to use "in" or any other preposition in this context.
Remember that it is also correct to spell "Internet" with the capital "I", e.g.
I'll try to look for it on the Internet. Now both spellings are treated as correct but initially the word "Internet" was only spelt with the capital letter. Some native speakers of English still believe that it is more correct to write "Internet" than "internet".
More examples:
More and more people are shopping on the internet. She looked it up on the Internet. John put his pictures on the internet.

However, some other prepositons can be used with the word "internet" in some special contexts. Study the following examples:
You can buy lots of goods over the Internet. (You could use the phrase "on the Internet" with the same meaning in this particular sentence.)
They sent the photos over the internet. ( The phrase "on the internet" sounds wrong here.)
Do you have access to the internet at home? (There are no other options here, because you always have access to something.)
I learnt about this from the Internet. (The phrase "on the Internet" sounds OK here.)
We live in the Internet era. (There are no other options here, because we say "in the era" and the word "Internet" is an adjective here. Similarly: in the internet age/in the internet business.
