In the beginning or at the beginning?
Which preposition is correct?

Study the following example sentences:

They took an exam at the beginning of the year.
Do you get paid at the beginning of the month in advance?
I want to ask you about something that I brought up at the beginning of the programme.
The audio quality at the beginning of this section is not the best.
You will probably agree that we may be at the beginning of a new era.
It was ten years ago, at the beginning of my career.
The wedding will be at the beginning of June.

Only "at the beginning" can be followed by "of". It seems to be wrong to say "in the beginning of something", so even if some native speakers of English use it, you should avoid it.
If you don't use "of", you can use either "in the beginning" or "at the beginning". It is also worth knowing that statistically, when you don't say "of something", "in the beginning" is more often used than "at the beginning".

Try to help me with the situation I set up at the beginning.
I thought that in the beginning it was a little bit awkward.
He would laugh about how upset he had been at the beginning.
In the beginning, Meg seemed okay with that and even thanked him for being honest.

Jeżeli w zdaniu podajemy (poprzez użycie "of something") czego jest to początek, poprawną formą jest "at the beginning".
It was ten years ago, at the beginning of my career. = To było dziesięć lat temu, na początku mojej kariery.

Jeżeli natomiast nie podajemy nazwy rzeczy, okresu czasu itp. (czyli nie używamy "of something"), lepszym wyborem wydaje się być "in the beginning".
In the beginning, we didn't know what would happen or how long it would go on. = Na początku nie wiedzieliśmy co się stanie ani jak długo to potrwa.

in the beginning = ogólnie na początku
at the beginning = na początku czegoś (zwykle podajemy czego)

Stosowanie "in the beginning of something" uważane jest za błąd. Natomiast stosowanie "at the beginning" bez "of something" jest dopuszczalne i powszechnie stosowane. Dzieje się tak dlatego, że często wiemy z kontekstu o czego początek chodzi, więć nie musimy w zdaniu dodawać "of something". Przykłady:

I want to ask you about something that I brought up at the beginning. = Chcę cię zapytać o coś o czym wspomniałem na początku.
I want to ask you about something that I brought up at the beginning of the programme.= Chcę cię zapytać o coś o czym wspomniałem na początku tego programu.
